ABPA results from hypersensitivity reaction to the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus.

 

Epidemiology

ABPA is an important complication of asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Pathophysiology

ABPA is characterized by intense airway inflammation with eosinophils and the formation of mucus plugs.

Neutrophils and deficiency of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 may be involved.

Periods of exacerbation and remission can lead to bronchiectasis and fibrotic lung disease.
